But we didn't know, it was PowerPC to x86 - the approach that we've taken is to actually emulate the full Xbox 360 hardware layer, so the OS for the 360 is actually running when you run the game, and if you watch the games boot right now you'll see the Xbox 360 boot animation come up. Millions of people made investments in 360 content and we just thought that the right thing to do was to make that content go forward. How it happened was, almost exactly a year ago, we started talking about things that we could do to make 360 owners look at Xbox One as a safe place to play. Phil Spencer: It is hard and it was our decision in the leadership team to make the investment.
Jeff Gerstmann: How are you guys doing that stuff? It seems like emulating an Xbox 360 on Xbox One would be. Would be interesting to hear people's thoughts on this - really I'd like to ask someone at Xbox but don't really know anyone who'd reply. This would allow full backward compatibility and would not require a new emulator to be written. Having said that there is already a perfectly good original Xbox emulator available on the 360, and if the Xbox One is capable of emulating the 360 and its OS then surely it must also be possible to run the original original Xbox emulator, inside the 360 emulator on the Xbox One. I am aware that both the Xbox One and original Xbox are x86, so making a new emulator that ran directly on the Xbox One wouldn't be that hard.
